IHS Alumni International Award

Join IHS Alumni International in rewarding individuals and institutions from around the world who contribute to urban management and development, through outstanding initiatives and innovative practices.

Introduction
No country has grown to middle income level without industrializing and urbanizing (World Development Report, 2009). However, urban actors at the local level both professional and non-professional are largely neglected by politicians and the media yet they are the main catalysts behind the processes shaping cities as engines of economic growth and development. It is therefore the reason why IHS-AI finds it worthwhile to recognise and honour these key actors in urban management and development. The award will be presented to the winner on behalf of IHS Alumni International and IHS who have contributed immensely towards the establishment of this award.

Objectives of the Award
1.    To recognise the efforts of key actors in urban management and development at grassroot level in cities
2.    To share knowledge and experiences in dealing with urban challenges at grassroot level in various cities
3.    To promote low cost innovative approaches to solving urban challenges at grassroot level in cities
4.    To create awareness on new approaches in dealing with the most pressing challenges for urban managers in various cities

Significance of the Award
The IHS Alumni Award recognises excellence in urban management and development and the winner will be acknowledged as having greatly contributed to sustainable urban development. The prize will be delivered by the alumni of a world leading actor in urban management and development in training and research; the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) which in 2007 was selected winner of the UN-HABITAT Scroll of Honour Award.
The award winner will receive a recognition plaque for their efforts in addition to benefiting from a fully paid trip to the World Urban Forum to take place in Naples in 2012. During the World Urban Forum, the winner will get a chance to meet and interact with high profile personalities as well as share experiences with urban development practitioners and academicians from across the world.

Management of the Award
The award will be administrated by the IHS Alumni Award Secretariat in Rotterdam. The award secretariat will be responsible for appointing a nominations committee as well as an independent IHS Alumni Award Jury which will be responsible for selecting the award winner. In addition, the secretariat will be responsible for creating awareness about the IHS Alumni Award; receiving nominations; and budgeting for the award ceremony.
As a standard procedure, nominations forms will be sent to the IHS-AI Secretariat. The secretariat will submit them to the Nomination Committee which will short list nominees to make it to the last round. The Nomination Committee will submit the short lit to the independent Jury which will make a decision on the eventual winner. The secretariat, Nomination Committee and the Jury may seek independent reports on the work carried out by the nominees for the Award. No nominee is expected to nominate himself or herself and providing falsified information will lead to automatic qualification.

Future Directions and Sustainability of the Award
In future, a fund will be established to secure the future of the award. The scope of the award in the future will widen with the aim of building a network of winners, so that they continue to benefit from their achievements. This will involve the introduction of a cash amount in addition to the award plaque in order to assist winners to extend benefits of their work to urban communities where they are needed most.
