Alternatives for Forced Evictions in Sub-Saharan Africa

Country and location: Nairobi, Kenya

Dates: 18- 29 October 2010

Target audience: The target group will include 75% of NFP alumni. The target group should be a matching group of professionals working in one of the following areas:

· Urban and regional planning, development and management;
· Housing and land;
· Local and Central Government Employees working within urban planning, housing and land;
· Lecturers and researchers from Institutes and Universities working within urban planning,
housing and land;
· Professionals from NGOs and Private Sector working in the area of urban planning, housing
and land.

Alumni are allowed to invite colleagues, if well motivated and to a limited extent.

Based on the Nuffic criteria, IHS has developed the following selection criteria. The alumni associations will support IHS in finding the most suitable and matching participants:

· Who have the nationality of one of the identified SSA countries (with a majority of participants
coming from Kenya);

· Half of the participants are women. We will ensure that female participants will be selected
first. After that the male participants will be selected with a gender balance skewed to female
participants;

· Participants must have completed training (NFP) at IHS or another Dutch institute before end
June 2008;

Objectives:

· Update participants on housing rights and challenges the rights based approach to housing

· Update participants on forced evictions, the causes, scale and impact

· Update the participants on possible alternatives to forced evictions like in-situ upgrading, land sharing, land swapping and sustainable resettlement

· Update participants on the role that international organisations, NGOs, and CBOs play in developing alternatives to forced evictions

· Final publication of the refresher course outcomes and outputs.
