Arrange your residence permit
Arranging of your visa
Prospective students should check if they need a visa to stay in the Netherlands
Students of our Post-graduate diploma courses – short stay visa
Students of our 3 or 4 week Post-graduate diploma courses should check if they need a visa to stay in the Netherlands. If so, you will need to apply for a short stay (Schengen) visa yourself. Please check with the Netherlands Representation (Embassy/Consulate) in your country for the procedure and documents you should submit. The time it takes to arrange a short stay visa varies per country.
Students of our MSc Programme - Visa / residence permit
If you are enrolled in our master course IHS will apply for both your visa as your residence permit since this is nowadays one integrated procedure. Approval of the application of the visa means automatically that a residence permit will be issued as well. Please don’t start this procedure yourself. This visa, or so called ‘authorization for a temporary stay’ (in Dutch called a Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf) is given as a stamp in your passport and is valid for 180 days. You need this visa if you do not have the nationality of one of the countries of the EU, or of Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and the United States of America. For people from some African countries: if you are travelling through the U.K., you may need a transit visa. Please make sure you are well informed about that before you leave your country. They may send you back when you reach the U.K. if you do not have a transit visa. You will also need a transit visa upon return.
Since the approval of the visa means that a residence permit will be processed as well, there is no need to apply separately for this anymore. Once in the Netherlands, we will assist you picking up your residence permit, which will be available in the office of the Immigration Services (IND) in Rotterdam.
For students from China
Students from China must register to NUFFIC in The Hague, The Netherlands for a "NUFFIC Certificate" before their visa applications can be filed. In order to register for a "NUFFIC Certificate", you will have to take the IELTS Test (Academic Version) and send the IELTS Report Form to NUFFIC and copies of your diplomas and degrees. We would like to inform Chinese students to start this procedure at least 4 months before the start of the MSc Programme. See for more information about this:
