About Rotterdam

Rotterdam is a young and dynamic city with one of the largest ports in the world and a strong emphasis on the knowledge-intensive sectors of the economy. It's a city of modern architecture, innovation, creativity, events, leisure and recreation. More than one million people from at least 160 countries live in the Rotterdam region. This global feeling is due to the fact that Rotterdam is situated on the water and for forty consecutive years has been the world’s largest port.

Life in Rotterdam

The quality of life is exciting in Rotterdam. The city focuses on all lifestyles and cultures. Affordable as well as exclusive housing is available both in the urban and suburban areas. Rotterdam is also a city of large-scale events in the fields of art, music, dance and theatre. A wide range of cuisines from all corners of the globe, music festivals, various stages and a rich variety of shops can be found here. Public favourites of the first degree are the International Film Festival, The North Sea Jazz Festival, Poetry International and the Caribbean Summer Carnival. In addition many world famous sport events take place like the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, the Fortis Marathon and the Rotterdam CHIO.

Architecture

Architecture will be high on Rotterdam's agenda in 2007. All year long, there will be exhibitions and special events relating to outstanding buildings and locations in the Netherlands' leading city for modern architecture. The city prepares for a yet stronger position in Europe.

Rotterdam in 2007

In 2007, Rotterdam will be within direct reach of Paris, London and Frankfurt by high-speed train. The realization of a citywide fibre optic network is challenging for inhabitants, entrepreneurs as well as for the local government. High-profile projects that express the urban ambitions are De Kop van Zuid, the new central station and surrounding area, the second Maasvlakte and the Erasmus Medical Centre, which is the largest university medical centre in the Netherlands and among the best in the world. Rotterdam focuses on new economic spearheads like the medical sector, new media and tourism.
