Rationale of the Programme
This master programme enables you to understand what makes urban regions competitive in the global, knowledge economy, and how their competitiveness can be further enhanced. It is especially designed for those who have finished a Bachelor’s in economics, management, architecture or urban planning and want to know everything about the way successful urban regions function and are managed, as well as urban policy makers, managers, consultants and researchers interested in urban economics. The programme focuses on European cities as well as on leading cities in emerging economies. It combines important theoretical concepts with practical case studies from Europe and beyond. The course has an excellent reputation and an extensive network of lecturers, alumni and partners, both within Europe and globally.
The topics of the course include urban dynamics, urban economics, governance, sustainable development and climate change, transport economics and policy, global networks and international trade, city marketing, urban tourism, urban finance and the creative city. Optional courses can be taken on housing and land economics, social urban development, urban planning and urban infrastructure. The courses are lectured by top researchers.

Target group
Designed for European urban managers and those interested in studying European competitive cities.
Course objectives
The aim is to form urban managers able to create sustainable and competitive metropolitan regions. The programme combines an intensive academic education with concrete European experiences.
Methodology
For the first six months of the programme, participants will stay at IHS, EUR, Rotterdam. During this period, the courses will be linked to the Master programme in Urban Management and Development. The last six months comprise of research in Barcelona, Antwerp, Copenhagen or Venice by the participants.
