Livable and Sustainable Inner-Cities in Southern African Countries

Dates: 2 weeks, 16-27 August 2010
Application deadline: 14 June 2010

Target audience: The course targets NFP alumni who are urban professionals occupying positions in different sectors of society, namely local and national government, private sector and NGOs. Participants will be chosen according to their professional experience in one or more of the following topics: housing and human settlement planning, inner-city development, supportive environments for the urban poor, revitalization and regeneration projects. Eligible candidates are from South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and previous NFP countries. The course is organised in cooperation with the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

Objectives: After the successful completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

• have expanded their knowledge on the role of inner-cities in southern African cities and in the lives of low income men and women;

• have expanded their knowledge on inner-city revitalization and the challenges of the urban poor, in particular women;

• have developed new and improved their skills on dealing inner-city revitalization and the challenges of the urban poor; as well as understanding how alternative and more progressive policies can create more inclusive and supportive environments;

• have exchanged knowledge and experiences with fellow participants as well as IHS lecturers and lectures of the School of Architecture and Planning at WITS;

• bring home a concerted plan for action, i.e. a personal set of goals/activities to engage in to improve inner-city development in their own city based on their experiences in the course;

• have also gained exchange of experience as well as knowledge of the South African example by the involvement of regional experts and exchange with South African participants from the School of Architecture and Planning at WITS.

Alumni who want to apply are the following professionals:

•    Housing and Land Management practitioners and policy makers
•    Urban and Regional Planning Development and Management
•    Local and Central Government employees working with issues of the urban poor, urban development and inner-cities
•    Lecturers and researchers from Institutes and Universities working on issues of urban development, inner-cities, and the urban poor
•    Professionals from NGOs and Private Sector working in the area of urban development, inner-cities, and the urban poor

Submit a motiviation statement in your application form online. Once you are accepted for the course you are required to submit the outline for a paper/ presentation which describes your experience with inner- city revitalization and the urban poor in inner cities in your own city.
