Half the world’s population now live in built-up areas, with an estimated 60 million people being added every year. This rapid urban growth leads to environmental degradation, unemployment and excessive demands on services and infrastructure. To address this it is necessary to develop best practices in efficient land use and sustainable community development, while designing for smart growth in areas like mass transit and distributed energy systems.

Theme 1: Strategic systemic approach to sustainable urbanization
Theme 2: Urban environment and sustainable urbanization concepts
