Enumerations - Count me in!

IHS participated in book launch at WUF V in Rio de Janeiro

IHS staff member Saskia Ruijsink temporarily worked in Kenya for UN-HABITAT. During her time there she participated in producing a book. The subject area is participatory enumeration (a participatory data collection method often used to engage citizens in obtaining improved security of tenure and for the improvement of land management). The hard copy will come soon and the IHS library will make them available.

The Community Organizations Development Institute (CODI), a public institution from Thailand organized the networking event in coordination with the Global Land Tool Network (UN-HABITAT). The event provided a networking opportunity for professionals from academia, government, community-based organizations, civil society and private sector, for sharing experiences about participatory enumeration, a community-led surveying technique. Carley Pennink (IHS) moderated this event and Saskia Ruijsink (IHS) presented the work of The Global Land Tool Network in general and more particularly its work focusing on enumeration. In this event the following publciations were launched: the book ‘Count me in – surveying for tenure security and land management’ and two policy briefs ‘Tackling tenure security in slums through participatory enumerations’ and ‘Improving data collection for urban planning through participatory enumerations’.

This book has been produced as follows:

  1. Jean du Plessis did scoping study: what is currently being done on 'participatory enumeration.
  2. Writeshop: around 15 urban professionals wrote a case study and send it to the editor. All participants came together for 1 week (writeshop), they presented their work and got feedback form each other (content) and from editors (how to write) and an artist made illustrations.
  3. Finalisation: 2 editors finalised the book, in consultation.
