IHS and RHV Merger

The Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) and the Regionale Economie, Haven- en Vervoerseconomie (RHV) BV (Regional, Port and Transport Economics) are joining forces.  Both Institutes are active in the field of urban development and international (research) projects in urban studies. Ultimately, this new combination will transform into the Erasmus School of Urban Management: the gateway to international urban issues at the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR).

"…by joining together, we wish to create within the Erasmus University Rotterdam a powerful organization for urban development and urban management.”

-- IHS Director, Mr. Kees van Rooijen

Both institutions have many similarities and complement each other, leading to a strong concentration of expertise. The IHS focus has traditionally been engaged with developing countries, while the RHV focus is urban development in Europe and the United States. IHS has traditionally a strong focus on education, while research plays a very central role within RHV in addition to education. Part of this research is undertaken with the RHV affiliate organization, the European Institute for Comparative Urban Research (EURICUR).

The merger officially commenced on January 1, 2011. Full integration should be completed by the end of 2013.  IHS and RHV are currently working together on postgraduate masters. This cooperation intends to be more deeply developed. IHS has a formal collaboration between the Erasmus School of Economics and the Faculty of Social Sciences. These relationships will remain the same.

It is intended that RHV, which is currently situated in the H Building, will join IHS in the T Building.  Kees van Rooijen, director of IHS, will be the managing director of the new merger.  Professor Leo van den Berg will remain the Director of EURICUR.

According to Mr. van Rooijen:"…by joining together, we wish to create within the Erasmus University Rotterdam a powerful organization for urban development and urban management.”
