Rationale of the Training Course
Half the world’s population now live in built-up areas, with an estimated 60 million people being added every year. This rapid urban growth leads to environmental degradation and excessive demands on services and infrastructure. Energy consumption has increased drastically. To address this it is necessary to develop sustainable urban energy policies and best practices in efficient land use, transport, sustainable buildings and sustainable development overall. Korea has extensive experience in eco restoration to improve sustainability and reduce energy consumption. The river ways in the inner city of Seoul have fully been restored. This course draws on these and other Korean best practices. UN Habitat and IHS bring in international experiences.

The International Urban Training Center (IUTC) was established in 2007 in cooperation with Gangwon province of Korea and UN-HABITAT as a training center to build the capacity of cities and towns nationally and in the Asian and Pacific region in support of the goal of sustainable urbanization.
With training focus on sustainable urban development, IUTC provides participants such as policy makers and urban planners with a toolkit to develop and implement sustainable urbanization policies and programs in their communities.
IUTC’s core curriculum focuses on environmental restoration and strategic approaches to planning, developing and maintaining ecologically sound communities. As part of the UN-HABITAT family, the center has been devoted to promoting civil and human rights, decent shelter, water, electricity, sanitation, health and education services to communities in the Asia-Pacific region
