In our increasingly urbanised world, and with growing concerns over energy issues, a sustainable energy policy is critical for cities and towns everywhere.

This course helps contribute to sustainable urbanization through improved decision-making and project implementation.

Theme 1: A sustainable urban energy concept and strategy
Theme 2: Alternative energy: renewable categories and their impacts
Theme 3: Climate change vs. Energy planning and management
Theme 4: Sustainable energy policy and planning instruments

Learning objectives
On completion of the course, participants will be able to:
·    understand the environmental and economic impact of energy demand on urban infrastructures and sustainable urbanization,
·    make effective and sustainable regional energy plan and policy.

Target groups

High-level policymakers, city and community leaders such as mayors and councillors, high-level officials in central government and the private sector

Course Objectives:

  • To develop a better understanding of the actual and future urban energy concepts and impacts: built environment, energy consumption, environmental health impacts, sustainable energy production and use.
  • To introduce and to discuss the technical and eco-financial aspects of the new urban energy technologies and approaches: energy efficiency, storage systems, bio-combustibles, wind turbines, photovoltaic cells, hydrogen, nuclear, hydro power, etc.
  • To appre ciate international and local governments strategies, policies and instruments in addressing energy demand, sustainable energy supply and urban planning (growth),
  • To offer a set of effective decision support tools and methods for sustainable urban energy planning, thus
  • To provide entry points for collaboration with energy suppliers in particular the privatesector,
  • Through information and case studies, to provide a background that enables a better understanding of sustainable urban energy planning options and practices, and
  • To contribute to the achievement of sustainable urbanization through enhanced decision-making process and project implementation.

Course Contents:

Theory

  • Introduction to the actual and future urban energy concepts, scenarios and impacts: non renewable versus renewable energy, urban sprawlversus energy consumption, environmental health impacts, sustainable energy production and use.
  • Technical and eco-financial aspects of the new urban energy technologies and approaches: energy efficiency, storage systems for reliable future power supply networks, clean production, bio-combustibles, wind turbines, photovoltaic cells, hydrogen, nuclear, etc.
  • International and national energy policies, regulations, planning, instruments and experiences: Bio ethanol in Brazil and USA, Photovoltaic cells and solar energy promotion in Europe, eco-design and renewable built environment in Barcelona and other cities, awareness-raising education, etc.
  • Sustainable Energy production and climate change: scenarios, impacts, costs, equity and healthy cities.

Practice

  • Review of international energy policies: case study
  • Review of national and local energy demonstration projects: case study
  • Korean demonst ration project facilities: On-site study
  • Evaluation of energy policies and management techniques education
