55 years Investing in People who Make Cities Work

IHS, Erasmus University, Rotterdam
The Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) is a centre of international education, advisory and research, which is part of the Erasmus University, Rotterdam.

For 60 years, it has been our mission to develop human and institutional capacities, to reduce poverty and improve the quality of life in cities.

The core of IHS
At IHS, issues like poverty and improvement of urban quality of life are approached through three core activities: education, advisory and applied research. These areas are interconnected, as linking theory and practice is our way of ensuring that accurate inputs and real study cases reflect in the educational programmes.
The holistic, multidisciplinary approach to urban management at IHS includes six main expertise areas:: land development, infrastructure, environment, sustainability and climate change, housing , planning and strategies, competitiveness and resilience.

Supporting city changers
Nowadays, more than half of the world population is living in urban areas, which are even expected to triple in surface in the next decade. Our urban future confronts us with great innovations and challenges. As urban specialists, we understand that cities are the economic engines of the world, fostering business opportunities, outstanding technological developments, cultural transformations and social, community sustained innovations.

IHS trains and advises professionals on a global scale through its integrated approach in education, advisory services and research that offers practice and theory on urban management and development. IHS alumni are active urban experts, ranging from architects, social scientists, economists, to public administration workers, civil servants, and government officials.
