MSc degree in Urban Management and Development
The part-time track of the Urban Management and Development master programme provides a unique opportunity for both professionals and IHS alumni to (re-)invest in enhancing their qualifications and academic development. Participants will acquire and build on the knowledge, the skill-set and the network necessary to excel as innovative urban managers and leaders who can manage cities with an in-depth understanding of urban theory and practice.
This alternative master track is specially designed for working professionals who wish to grow in their career. The master programme structure allows you to combine studying by offering the courses in three main batches.
IHS alumni who have graduated from the Urban Management and Development Theories (UMDT), and/or the International Course on Housing and Urban Development (ICHUD) short courses, and/or the Urban Management and Development: Sustainable Urbanism (UMDSU) track, are welcome to complete the rest of the modules and earn their MSc in Urban Management and Development for a discounted tuition fee. Upon completion of the programme, participants receive a worldwide recognized Master of Science degree from IHS, Erasmus University Rotterdam.
Programme structure
Master's core period/Urban Management and Development Theories (UMDT)
Duration: 3 months
The core period of the Urban Management & Development master programme provides in-depth insight into urban theories, policies and trends worldwide. This is offered in the form lectures and workshops on real world urban issues, urban governance and policy-making and the financial and economic aspect of tackling those. The course is divided into core modules and intermediary periods leading to a specialization period of 6 different areas of urban expertise. It will study cities from different multidisciplinary thematic perspectives such as “Complex City”, “Spatial City”, “Sustainable City”, “Green City”, “Livable City”, “Informal City” and “Competitive City”.
Master's specialization period/International Course on Housing and Urban Development (ICHUD)
Duration: 3 months
The specialization period allows participants to gain enhanced understanding of a certain aspect of urban management and development depending on their academic and professional orientation and interests. The specialization combines lectures and participatory methodologies such as workshops, simulations games, seminars and group work and it is designed to emphasize the link between theory and practice:
Master's thesis period
Duration: 6 months (full-time presence is not obligatory)
The thesis period opens with Research Methods workshops which offer the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to conduct academic research and complete the Master’s thesis. The students work under the guidance of their thesis supervisor and with the support of the IHS academic staff.
