About IHS

The Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) is a centre of urban expertise of Erasmus University Rotterdam. Looking at cities from different perspectives, we educate urban professionals from diverse backgrounds, consult national and local governments from the Global South and engage in cutting-edge urban research. Internship Description & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be part of the Department of Urban Economics & Governance, supporting us in education, advisory and research activities.

Tasks may include:

  • Literature search and review for teaching and research activities
  • Support in the execution of courses (work with learning management systems, support logistics, etc.)
  • Data collection and cleaning
  • Preparation of tables and visualisations
  • Writing up sections for papers and reports
  • Formulating blog articles and other types of communication about ongoing activities
  • Contributing to proposal writing
  • Organisational tasks (e.g., sending targeted emails, support in the organisation of academic events)

Requirements

  • The candidate must be a student at a Dutch or foreign university (with a valid Residence Permit for the Netherlands) in a graduate/undergraduate (Master/Bachelor) study programme that requires a work placement/internship at an international organisation such as IHS.
  • The candidate must have successfully completed at least two years of an undergraduate degree or be currently enrolled as a master’s degree student in (urban) economics, public policy, sociology, development studies, governance studies, urban management, or other related disciplines.
  • The candidate should have an excellent academic record and demonstrate an affinity for topics related to urban economics and governance.

Desired Skills and Characteristics

  • Ability or willingness to work in a working environment with a high degree of cultural and professional diversity.
  • Ability to work in a team, but also to show own initiative.
  • Ability to work on several tasks at the same time and under the pressure of deadlines.
  • Ability to offer and find creative solutions to the tasks at hand.
  • Strong and proven organisational skills.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English; the knowledge or full command of other languages are an asset.
  • Excellent computer skills, such as good use of Microsoft Office applications; proficiency in data management and analysis software (e.g., Stata, R, SPSS) is an asset.
  • Strong motivation to meaningfully contribute to the goals and activities of IHS as a higher education institution and advisory office.

Terms & Conditions

  • IHS will establish an internship agreement that states the terms and conditions of the internship. This document needs to be signed by IHS, a representative of the intern's university, and the intern. Candidates that cannot provide university approval for the respective agreement cannot be accepted.
  • The candidate must have a Dutch residence permit valid for the total period of the internship or be an EU citizen. Candidates without a permit cannot be accepted. Any other residence permits not issued by Dutch authorities or a permit from another European country are not valid for the Netherlands.
  • IHS and MUG students are ineligible to apply for an internship position.
  • The intern position is available in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, from a minimum of four to a maximum of six months.
  • Full-time internships have a workload of 40 hours per week. Part-time internships (minimum 0.6 FTE) may be possible.
  • We offer a cost compensation of 300 euros gross per month for undergraduate students and 500 euros gross per month for master students (pro rata for part-time internships).

Deadlines for applications

The Department of Urban Economics & Governance hosts two interns per year: one in fall/winter (starting September) and one in winter/ spring (starting January to March). We accept interns for a minimum of four months to a maximum of six months. We do not offer internships over the summer months of July and August.

Applications must be sent at least two months before the planned start of the internship.
