Should I join this course?
This course is intended for Orange Knowledge Programme (OKP)/Netherlands Fellowship Programme (NFP) alumni from South Africa and neighbouring OKP/NFP countries. As the course takes place online, eligible countries are South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. Alumni are allowed to invite colleagues, if well motivated and to a limited extent. This course is aimed at alumni whose current practice is related to the theme of the course. Female participation is strongly encouraged. The participants will be chosen based on their relevant professional backgrounds, strong motivation, and a high potential for the prolonged development impact of the training.
IHS will implement the course in three modules. Each module will have inputs (real data collected by the participants) and outputs, produced by the participants, that will be used as entry points for the next module; the last module will combine them and use the acquired tools to develop strategies and prepare the action plan, proposing green actions to reduce the impact and vulnerabilities of the related sectors to water extremes. Two cities (one in South Africa and one in Zimbabwe or Mozambique) will be chosen, with the local partners, to implement this exercise.
- Module 1: Impact of water extremes events on the functioning of the water and food sectors
The output will be a list and characterization of main extreme water hazards occurring in these two cities with the identification of their impact on the functioning of the related sectors. The topics include an overview of climate and water extreme hazards, focusing on floods, droughts, and landslides; an overview of disaster risk reduction (ORR) and its links to sustainable development; organization and management arrangement of the two sectors; food production in rural and urban areas: the concept of water markets in times of water scarcity; drivers of water markets in southern Africa: water scarcity, uneven distribution, water markets in climate change adaptation; the newly developed IHS green city conceptual framework and its use to address CC issues focusing on water scarcity, urban food production, and security. The module will use real data and will end with a group exercise to identify the main impacts caused by the local water extremes hazards in the two selected sectors.
- Module 2: A vulnerability assessment of the water and food sectors with regard to the impact caused by extreme water events.
The output will be a list and characterization of the main vulnerabilities of the two sectors related to the impact caused by extreme water events. The topics include an introduction to "vulnerability; vulnerability diagram (who is vulnerable to what and to what extent); understanding the interaction between hazards, vulnerability, capacity and disaster risk; community-based and livelihood adaptation; gender and adaptation to water extremes (examples and case studies).
- Module 3 (practical): Strategies and green actions to reduce vulnerabilities in the two studied sectors to water extremes events.
The IHS green city action plan methodology will be used to guide the final group work exercise. The final output will be the strategies and the action plan with managerial and green actions to reduce the water extreme vulnerabilities of the two sectors and proposals to strengthen cooperation in the topic of this course among the cities involved in the training. Participants will be able to apply this action plan in their profession
What will I learn?
By the end, you should be able to:
- Understand how the improvement of water management enhances water security, safety, and their links with poverty reduction, food security, and sustainable living environment;
- Assess vulnerabilities and impacts caused by water extremes on the functioning of the water and food sectors in peri-urban and urban areas;
- Propose strategies and green actions to help two cities (one in South Africa and one in Zimbabwe or Mozambique) but applicable to other cities in the Southern African region to better manage these sectors and cope with water-extremes in CC events.
- Understand how the water and the food production systems are organized in two semi and urban areas and assess the impacts caused by water extremes
- Identify, describe and prioritize the main vulnerabilities of these 2 sectors
- Apply managerial and green tools to develop a green city action plan using the new methodology developed by IHS, and define strategies and green actions to reduce the identified vulnerabilities in the two sectors
