Back to overview

Jurian Edelenbos is academic director of the EUR Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) and a professor of Public Administration, in the field of Water Governance, at the Department of Public Administration of Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Professor Edelenbos (born in 1971) studied Public Administration at Leiden University and Erasmus University Rotterdam from 1990-1994. From February 1995 until January 1996 he worked as a research assistant at the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management, Delft University of Technology. Subsequently, he was a PhD Student at that same university, and later on (until December 2000) an Assistant Professor. In 2000 he completed his PhD on process management strategies of interactive governance in regional urban development projects.

From 1999 until 2001 he also worked as a consultant at TNO Strategy, Technology and Policy. There he mainly advised on the field of process management of sustainable development and interactive governance and urban management.
In 2001 he started working at the Department of Public Administration, Erasmus University Rotterdam in the field multiple land use in regional development. Jurian was appointed as professor in Water Governance in March 2009. He lectures and conducts research in the field of complex decision-making with a special interest in water governance.

He focuses on processes of water governance through the lens of complexity (self-organization, coevolution, and complexity management). In his research he pays special attention to citizen participation (self-governance), the role and meaning of trust and control in inter-organizational cooperation, processes of joint-fact finding, governance capacity, resilient coastal cities, and institutional evolution in democracy.

Jurian Edelenbos has written many international articles and book chapters on these subjects in influential scientific journals such as Governance (2005), Public Administration (2005, 2010, 2011), Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory (JPART, 2006), American Review of Public Administration (2009), Policy Sciences (2009), Administration and Society (2007, 2010), and Public Management Review (1999). Recently he co-authored with Professor Victor Bekkers and Professor Bram Steijn the book Innovation in the Public Sector (2011, Palgrave).
