The Nature-based Solutions (NbS) cluster focuses on how ecological systems can be harnessed to address pressing urban challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity, and social inequality. By integrating environmental sustainability with inclusive urban development, the cluster explores innovative approaches that strengthen resilience and promote regenerative cities.
Nature-based Solutions (NbS) offer an integrated approach to addressing urban challenges through the protection, restoration, and sustainable management of ecosystems. This cluster explores how NbS intersect with circular economy, climate resilience, just energy transitions, and broader sustainability transformations. Recognising that ecological strategies must also be socially just, the cluster emphasises inclusive, locally embedded approaches that respond to environmental risks while enhancing community well-being. Drawing on IHS’s interdisciplinary strengths, the cluster fosters collaboration across research, education, advisory, and training activities, aiming to deepen institutional expertise and position NbS as a core competence area. Ongoing work engages with co-creation, community stewardship, and innovative governance frameworks to mainstream NbS into urban policy and practice. Through internal synergies and external partnerships, the cluster contributes to shaping resilient and regenerative urban futures while advancing IHS’s role as a thought leader in ecosystem-based planning and climate adaptation.
