IHS to the core

Rotterdam Skyline

At IHS, our work is grounded in the the cross-fertilisation of our main three activities: education, advisory services, and applied research. Our experts actively engage in the field, bringing first-hand insights from diverse urban contexts across the globe. This unique positioning allows IHS specialists to bridge theory and practice, enriching both the services we provide and the learning experience of our course participants.

Because our staff are simultaneously involved in education, research, and advisory work, they are able to deliver targeted support, practical training, and tailored solutions to our students and partners. Lessons from ongoing projects directly inform the classroom, while student insights and academic developments feed back into our external engagements creating a dynamic loop of learning and impact.

To further strengthen our integrated and impact-oriented approach, IHS has launched five transdisciplinary academic clusters. These clusters foster collaboration across thematic areas and bring together staff expertise around key urban challenges such as data analytics, urban informality, feminist urbanism, nature-based solutions, and the interconnectedness of housing, health, and climate change. By working across disciplines and professional domains, the clusters reinforce our commitment to addressing complex urban issues through holistic and context-sensitive solutions.
