Important!

Please note that we do not request our candidates any payment in advance for awarding a full Dutch scholarship. No full-scholarship recipients will be asked for visa expense payments. Please email us at courseinquiries@ihs.nl if you have any doubts about emails you have received on our behalf. All IHS emails, including staff, are official emails that follow the structure name[at]ihs[dot]nl.

Studying abroad is exciting, but it also involves costs that need to be covered in advance. Below is an overview of the fees and costs required to study at IHS. Please be aware that there can be other costs per individual case that are not mentioned below, such as (international) travel expenses, study materials, field visits, etc.

Deposit of living costs (for those who need to apply for a student visa & residence permit)

This deposit will be refunded monthly after the programme starts. A full sponsorship letter can serve as proof of living costs instead of sending the deposit in some cases. Please consult the Admissions office by sending your sponsorship letter for more advice.

Notes:

1. Those who pay the master’s programme tuition fee before 15th May will benefit from an early-bird discount of €1000 from the tuition fee. This will also guarantee a spot in the master’s programme.

The following fees and costs apply to all PhD full-time researchers. The precise amounts will differ according to your research modality outlined in your application and your supervisory team's approval after admission. The totals below reflect the costs of an individual completing research full-time at IHS for four years.

The fee is the same for EU and non-EU students. 

An annual administration fee of €2,150 applies if you have not finished after 4 years but stay enrolled and continue to receive supervision.

Entry visa + residence permit costs €210*

If you stay in the Netherlands for more than 90 days, you will need an MVV visa together with a residence permit. IHS PhD programme will apply for this visa for you from the Netherlands.

Minimum monthly living costs required by the Dutch Immigration office

If you need to apply for an MVV visa, you must provide a proof of sufficient living costs by transferring the required amount of living costs to IHS to support your visa application. The living costs will be refunded to you after your visa has been approved. 

For example, you come alone:

If you apply for a 1-year visa, you should transfer €17,556 (€1,463 x 12 months)

It is also possible to apply for a 4-year visa at once. In this case, you should transfer €70,224 (€1,463 x 48).

FieldworkThe tuition fees do not contribute to the cost of fieldwork, and this will need to be covered by the researcher independently.
