Alberto Gianoli (PhD Policy Studies, University of Bristol; MSc Economics, University of Milano) is an economist and management specialist with fifteen years of working experience as a researcher and consultant. His main areas of expertise and interest include urban environment and infrastructure, project and infrastructure finance, climate change adaptation and mitigation, decision making analysis (e.g. cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis, multi-criteria decision making), performance measurement and management, monitoring and evaluation, impact studies, urban and regional management and governance, and urban and regional economic development. At the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) Dr Gianoli is the Head of Urban Sustainability & Climate Change Resilience Department and is involved with high-profile research and consultancy assignments, is project leader for various international projects. He also teaches at IHS within the MSc in Urban Management and Development. In previous years he has been the chairperson of IHS Academic Board and of IHS Research Committee and has coordinated IHS PhD programme. Prior to joining IHS, Dr Gianoli worked for an international research and consultancy organisation on European Commission projects in the field of urban and regional (sustainable) development.

Dr. Gianoli has completed a wide range of consultancy assignments and has held various positions including project coordinator, team leader, senior technical advisor, principal researcher and trainer. He has carried out assignments for the World Bank, European Commission, United Nations (UNDP, UNEP, UN-HABITAT), OSCE and several national, regional and local governments world-wide. He has working experience in a number of countries including Italy, United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Kosovo, Romania, South Africa, Namibia, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Uganda, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Curacao. Dr. Gianoli coordinates IHS activities in Vietnam.
